Welcome to
Shining the Light on a Family in Darkness
“Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! When the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand. And they covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage. Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, against this family do I devise an evil, from which ye shall not remove your necks; neither shall ye go haughtily: for this time is evil. In that day shall one take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, and say, We be utterly spoiled: he hath changed the portion of my people: how hath he removed it from me! turning away he hath divided our fields. Therefore thou shalt have none that shall cast a cord by lot in the congregation of the LORD”
(Micah 2: 1-5).

Colonel Bo Gritz and Pastor Scott Stinson at Passover 2000,
when Colonel Gritz gave his famous lesson, One Godly man--
A Majority, the most ordered tape of that Passover Feast.
This is the article that Pastor Gayman asked to have removed
during the negotiations. Scott Stinson made the request
to Colonel Bo Gritz, who complied.

Jesus Christ, as part of His Sermon of the Mount (Matthew 7:15), warns us to beware of false prophets which come in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. He tells us in Luke 6:44, "FOR EVERY TREE IS KNOW BY HIS OWN FRUIT." The Prophet Jeremiah (Jer 48:10) curses those who "doeth the work of the Lord deceitfully." No question: When you’re catching flak, you must be on target. Satan’s power is extreme, exceeded by Arch Angel Michael (Gabriel’s visit with Daniel Chapter 10 and Revelation12), Jesus Christ, and God the Father. We know that an army of disembodied spirits have presence on earth to work evil by entering and controlling both men and beasts (Matthew 12, Mark 5). Demons especially target Christians who would be spiritual (Eph 6:12).. In defense, believers are admonished to put on the whole armor of God (Eph 6:13). With this preface, I want to comment somewhat on my personal experience with Bishop Dan Gayman and his Church of Israel near Schell City, Missouri.

Those of you who listen to my talk radio program, Freedom Call, are aware of my excitement concerning keeping the seven appointed Feast Days of God. I believe the Holy Spirit placed this interest in my mind more than two years ago. It was an answer to personal prayer, when Judy and I were married, that she attended the Church of Israel Feast celebrations. Furthermore, I was astonished to see that the church magazine was marked with an emblem that I didn’t know was public.

FINAL FLAG: I have related how the center star in my Great Grandfather Ethma Cauthen’s Confederate Battle Flag was larger that the other 12. My Grandmother, who raised me, told me the stars represented the 12-tribes of Israel joining the Messiah. The banner was square instead of rectangular so the blue Cross of St. Andrew would divide the field into four equal parts -- even as the tribes of Israel under Judah, Reuben, Ephraim, and Dan. Not finding any commercially available flag with a larger center star, I commissioned seamstress Vida Waite, a Spiker friend and Almost Heaven neighbor, to make one. It was further revealed to me that each of the quadrants should bear the brigade ensign of each chief tribe (Numbers 2:2), something Vida never finished. I presented an artist likening as a newsletter cover suggesting it may be the final ensign (Isaiah 5:26). The exact image of what I had in mind was the insignia for the Church of Israel! I couldn’t have been more happy.

COI: Judy and I reveled in the April week-long Feast of Passover and Unleavened Bread. We were there to be spiritually fed, and came away most satisfied. After a life of searching, I felt the Church of Israel was a true church of God. Everyone welcomed us and Bishop Gayman even asked me to be the keynote speaker at the God & Country evening service on the last day. The Church was started by Gayman’s Dad in 1941 and is serviced by an entire staff of ministers. Bob Burney and his family, some of the best people I’ve ever met, live at Schell City as part of the church. I’d met Bob, his partner Gary Cutler, and members of their AQUARAIN family at Dan Chittock’s Preparedness Expos. Something was "good" and different about them. Their countenance gives off the aura of a halo. I love being around them. I was thrilled to learn they were part of the Church community. It is said the acorn falls close to the tree, and that you can tell the parents by looking at the offspring. In the case of Bob and Becky Burney there is physical evidence. You can see the brilliance of their countenance in the expression and features of their seven sons and daughters: Brittany, Bobby, Brooke, Bethany, Boaz, Brianna, and Benjamin. Boaz Burney is a new Cub Scout and forever friend. No matter how dark and cold the day, Boaz is like a bright Spring day. I’ve never seen him without a beaming smile and eyes that shine. Being at the COI (except for the sulfur water and swarms of blood sucking insects), was like visiting paradise.

While there I was greatly impressed with their new Scout Troop 777 (God’s numbers), the church school, the Israelite community, and the uncommon musical abilities of the youngsters. It was obvious that the parents care and spend considerable quality time with their little ones. I was asked, as a former Scout Master, to talk to the troop and help jump start an adventure program. Loving young people, there is nothing I’d rather do. I promised to come early to the next feast period (Trumpets, Atonement, Tabernacles and The Last Great Day) and work with them on mountaineering. I donated money for equipment and planned to fly my twin-Cessna back and qualify them for the Aviation Merit Badge. We could hardly wait and were about to take-off from Sandy Valley (I had cleared a place for Hartzall in the back), when I was informed by a friend that the FBI had interviewed Gayman. Almost immediately thereafter, we received a faxed letter dis-inviting us. I was shocked, to say the least.

The first letter contained signature blocks for all four of the resident pastors (Dan Gayman, Scott Stinson, Gray Clark, and Reed Benson). The 25 September fax-letter referenced my October CFA Newsletter and Freedom Call broadcasts, saying: "The ministry and general life vision which God has called you to and that which He has called this Church to are not compatible. The program you are essentially calling for was one which the Church here endeavored to follow through the 70's and 80's. In 1986 the Church drew up a resolution essentially curtailing any courtship or marriage with any program or persons essentially along the lines spelled out in your Volume 9, Number 10, Center For Action magazine. Accordingly we are asking that you in your own person not come to the Feast of Tabernacles." That letter was discarded, missing the signatures of Scott Stinson and Gayman’s son-in-law, Reed Benson. A second letter was prepared, signed by Benson and Gray, and faxed to us the same day.

In reviewing the October Newsletter, I fail to find any reference that would cause a Church of God pastor or congregation to dis-fellowship a Christian family. On the other-hand, Timothy tells us that "the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils." Gayman sent a second fax in which he likened the Fellowship of Eternal Warriors (FEW) to a now defunct white supremacist group, "The Order."

THE ORDER: AKA "The Silent Brotherhood," started by Robert Matthews, was an underground terrorist organization which declared war on the U.S. Government and engaged in a series of violent crimes in 1983-84. Most of the membership is now serving lengthy prison sentences. It is thought that the group was inspired by William Pierce’s novel, The Turner Diaries, a book about American Nazis who overthrow Washington, D.C., nuke Israel and murder prominent American Jews. Pierce still resides in the D.C. suburb of Arlington, Virginia and runs an Aryan oriented web-site and newsletter, The National Alliance.

Following a series of murders, bank and armored car robberies, the FBI launched "Operation Clean-Sweep." On December 8th, 1984, after a 36-hour siege by 100+ police agents, Robert Mathews, 31 (like tax protestor Gordon Kahl, on 3 June 1983 in Smithville, Arkansas) was incinerated at his home on Whidbey Island (Puget Sound), Washington. The FBI subsequently arrested 23 known members, along with seven men of The Covenant, The Sword and The Arm of the Lord (CSA) on 22 April 1985. In December the FBI arrested another 10 Order members — all were found guilty of racketeering on 6 February 1986. During the trial Bruce Pierce (32), David Lane (48), and Richard Scutari (39) were accused of the 18 June 1984 machine gun murder of a Denver Jewish talk show host, Alan Berg — later a 1988 Hollywood production, Betrayed, staring Debra Winger and Tom Berenger.

The FBI next rounded up and charged 15 members of The Order and Aryan Nations with sedition. Thirteen of the group were indicted and went to trial at Fort Smith, Arkansas in February 1988. James Ellison (47), head of CSA became the prosecutions star witness. According to the indictment, the seditious efforts to destroy public utilities, pollute water, bomb ethnic groups, and establish guerrilla warfare training camps were financed by armed robberies and counterfeiting. The Order distributed $3.6-million from a Brinks armored car robbery in Ukiah, California to partisans (churches) across several states. Ellison testified that "Aryan churches" coordinated the criminal activities. The counterfeiting was short-lived. Using the printing press at Richard Butler’s Aryan Nations Church, at Haden Lake, Idaho, members of The Order ran off $500,000 in $50-bills. Three of the "brotherhood" were arrested while trying to pass the bogus bills in the Yakima Mall, Washington. They went on to dynamite a synagogue in Boise, Idaho, April 1984. The Order then murdered Walter West, one of their own, for "talking too much."

Like Thomas Jefferson, before them, the 13 defendants indicted and tried before a 10-man, two female jury for crimes of sedition, were found innocent on 7 April 1988. Even as Montana Militia head John Trochmann perjured himself at my trial, CSA chief Ellison lied on the stand under oath about the intended use of 50-gallons of cyanide and the defense convinced the jury that, to shorten his own plea-bargain sentence, his entire testimony was perjured.

BY THEIR FRUITS: Apparently, Dan Gayman was too close to The Order — so close that he was, according to his own words: "subpoenaed to the Federal Court House in Fort Smith in 1985 at the SEDITION TRIAL, and was under potential threat of indictment and 87 years of prison under Rico-statutes for alleged activities in the infamous ORDER." Gayman states in his letter to me: "Only an act of God, and the lack of any real evidence, was this Pastor finally released from the custody of U.S. Marshals, U.S. Attorneys, and FBI." Gayman had also been called to testify for the prosecution at the Gordon Kahl harboring trial, 1983, in Harrison, Arkansas. These associations, combined with the brief stop-over by Eric Rudolph and his mother, have made Gayman vulnerable to intimidation by law enforcement and area public opinion. Gayman says that I should "Reconsider making a marriage between what is commonly called ‘Identity’ and your ministry of ‘Protection and Preparedness’. It is absolutely unrealistic to try and mix guns and Identity. Moreover you will bring nothing but reproach upon the Gospel Of The Kingdom as you seek to mix the Maadi-Griffin or the Barrett with the words of Jesus Christ and His Apostles. Please do not bring disgrace upon the glorious Gospel of the Kingdom by bringing in a Barabbas philosophy. The philosophy of Barabbas and Jesus Christ will not blend together. You must make a choice between Christ or Barabbas." The Maadi-Griffin and Barrett are .50-caliber rifles.

I don’t expect anyone to remember my efforts to bring our POWs home; my testimony before Congress about illegal drug trafficking at the highest levels of the Executive Branch; the President George Bush, Get Bo Gritz! order to U.S. Attorney William Maddox; 1992 Presidential campaign; Ruby Ridge; Spike Training; Montana Freemen; Linda Wiegand sons; Eric Rudolph; Indianapolis Baptist Temple; and a host of other nationally reported involvements, but to be barred from God’s Appointed Feasts because Bishop Gayman relates the FEW to The Order, is disturbing and symptomatic of a guilty conscience. Not once within the USA have I raised a weapon against another human, nor encouraged such use by others. I have been, and remain, opposed to the use of deadly force by government police agencies against American citizens not threatening the lives of others. Gayman would do well to consider my response before the U.S. Senate Judiciary in answering Chairman Arlen Spector’s question: "In 25-words of less, what is wrong in American and what does the patriot movement want?" My obedient answer was: "Fair treatment with everyone equal under the law and no one above the law, not even those wearing badges and carrying guns." I have chosen Christ and our Constitution. My right to own firearms, including large-bore scoped weapons does not mean I advocate their illegal use. Despite the best efforts of manipulated federal and state prosecutors, I have never been convicted of any American crime. It is my belief that the FBI visit to the Church of Israel coerced Gayman to act in an anti-Christ-like fashion banning Judy and me from the COI Feast Celebration. Too often I have exposed their wrong doing and the federal bureaucrats fear I’ll do it again. It is my opinion that the feds are concerned I might restore esteem and fervor to a body cowed and neutered by threat.

STINSONS: While disappointed, Judy and I will do fine worshiping elsewhere. If my brief exposure to the COI ended with our aborted flight to Schell City, I wouldn’t bother to mention it in this Newsletter. Unfortunately, our rejection seems to have spawned a nasty aftermath. Judy was baptized at the COI by a young staff-evangelist, Scott Stinson. Judy admired Scott’s spirituality. I too was more than impressed by his sincerity as a man called to shepherd God’s sheep. Scott is father to seven talented children and husband of 17-years to an earth-angel named Lori. Upon completion of his Air Force service, young Scott entered college, but it was his learning at the Church of Israel under Bishop Gayman that refocus his life to working for God. Scott supplemented his COI instruction with bachelor and master’s degrees in Bible Studies. The Stinsons live on a farm near the Church where for the last seven-years, ordained by Gayman, he has served as a staff writer/researcher in the COI Publishing Ministry, taught Bible at the COI school, volunteered to be Scoutmaster, and been a paid preacher at the Church. Scott authored the book, The Final Exodus.

Immediately upon meeting Scott, I sensed he was much more than he seemed. By outside appearances, Scott is tall, handsome, athletic, and soft-spoken, a well bred Southern gentleman. What I perceive on the inside is the essence of a God-graced spiritual champion. Scott Stinson contains a true Christlove. Sensitive to his position at COI, and family responsibilities, I put aside the urging of my spirit to talk to Scott about the FEW. I still feel that Scott is called of God to be a spiritual warrior and liberator to the righteous in the times to come.

By Scott refusing to sign Gayman’s letter to me, his COI-world is collapsing. Bishop Gayman has seen fit to discharge Scott from his ministry. Gayman first fired Scott from his job as the church-school’s Gospel Doctrine teacher — meaning the Stinson children will have to pay tuition to continue. Scott was then called in and warned of his immanent departure. For the life of me, I cannot imagine, unless Dan Gayman has succumbed to malicious advice, why he would purge his Church of such a fine man and family. Could it be that the stains Gayman pointed out in his second, five-page letter, referencing The Order and Gordon Kahl, haven’t yet been made clean in his own life? How much did the potential prison terms in 1983 and 1985 squeeze his heart? Once your home is deeply soiled it isn’t easy to restore the original luster. Some of the darker tracks of the Silent Brotherhood may still mar the COI. Having been a long-time member of Gayman’s inner-circle, Scott knows the extent and bitter-fruits of any tainted associations. I know for a fact that Scott and his wife Lori have concerns about their exit from the COI -- sounding as much like a secret society as a church.

You can see their dilemma. Scott’s ordination and career is directly linked and dependant on Gayman’s pleasure. Their nearby home won’t be easy to sell and Scott will be at God’s mercy finding employment sufficient to relocate and care for his sizable family. His rift with Gayman opens the underbelly of the COI to possible inspection. If Gayman and his Church are clean, the transition will be routine. If on the other hand their Godly appearance covers dirt from the past, then Stinson’s may pose a threat. Scott and Lori are people of honor and most probably, while hurt at Gayman’s hand, would never betray church confidences. It is my experience that darkness hates light. Innocence can stand in the spotlight without concern, whereas guilt is exposed. I’m confident that if Dan Gayman and the COI are as sweet as they appear, the Stinsons will be accorded every consideration due a family who has dedicated their lives to God’s work at the Church of Israel. Otherwise, by his own fruit, we will know him, and I will be there to help this gifted family as required.

LESSONS: Concerning the COI and Bishop Gayman: The lesson for me is to stop searching for a so-called true-church and continue to close the distance between myself and God. Any time we put too much faith in flesh, Satan lures us further from where we should be. Judy and I will continue visiting the Rose Hill Covenant Church in Tulsa when possible, where Pastor Gabler (who married us) continues to praise, instead of play, God. Please don’t misinterpret my meaning. Nothing ruins the truth like stretching it! Bishop Dan Gayman and his ministers offer a perfectly wonderful Feast presentation and the COI news magazine is one of the best I’ve seen. These are good fruits. His knee-jerk rejection of me is within his scope of authority since the COI is not a church open to the public. Gayman, as head of his church, has every right to hire and fire who he will, but it is in these decisions that there is bitterness — especially if there is reason for the Stinsons to feel menaced. I’m saddened that what Judy and I saw as good has turned out to be somewhat less. We both hope our good relations with Burneys and Cutlers will remain strong, and that the holes may soon be filled where damaged by misunderstanding

As far as our continued keeping of the Feast Days, Judy and I attended Ted Garner Armstrong’s Inter-Continental Church of God, Feast of Tabernacles and Last Great Day, held at King’s Beach, North Lake Tahoe last month. Pastor Armstrong gave the most courageous sermons I’ve ever heard. It was as if he was a steady listener to Freedom Call and subscriber to this Newsletter. His Church may be 501 (c) (3), but obviously no one muzzles how he thinks and what he says. I was surprised to learn that ALL of his books and writings (numerous) are free of charge. It has been suggested that we arrange our own Feast celebration for Passover and Unleavened Bread. It is my plan to invite Pastor Scott Stinson to coordinate our efforts. Both Feast Days will be honored during the conduct of our Spike Field Operation at Sandy Valley, Nevada, Friday 6-9 Monday, April 2001 — as detailed in the following article.
